The ISSB assessment runs across 5 days: Day 1: Arrival, document verification, biometric allotment of chest numbers, opening briefing, and preliminary intelligence/screening tests. Day 2: Psychological Testing (WAT, Sentence Completion, TAT Picture Stories, Situation Reaction Test, Bio-Data Self Description). Day 3: GTO Tasks Part 1 (Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task, Half Group Task). Day 4: GTO Tasks Part 2 (Individual Obstacles, Command Task, Final Group Task) and Deputy President / Interview sessions. Day 5: Conference, Final Board Evaluation, and Departure.

There are four primary ISSB testing centers across Pakistan: ISSB Kohat (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), ISSB Gujranwala (Punjab), ISSB Rawalpindi (Army/Inter-Services), and ISSB Malir Cantt (Karachi, Sindh). Candidates receive a call-up letter specifying their assigned center.

The Day-1 test is conducted on computerized terminals and comprises two modules: Verbal Intelligence (usually 80-90 questions in 30-35 minutes) and Non-Verbal Intelligence (around 50-60 visual pattern questions in 25-30 minutes). Passing this test is required to proceed smoothly through the subsequent battery of tests.

In WAT, candidates view 100 words flashed sequentially for 10 seconds each on a screen. You must write the first natural, constructive, and meaningful sentence that comes to your mind. Focus on positive action, responsibility, teamwork, courage, and realism. Avoid pre-memorized artificial clichés or passive definitions.

Thematic Apperception Tests measure Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) including initiative, empathy, emotional stability, problem-solving, and social responsibility. Your hero/protagonist should identify a realistic challenge, take constructive and ethical action with a team, and bring the situation to a productive outcome.

Indoor GTO tasks include Group Discussions (GD) and Group Planning Exercises (GPE / Military Map problems). Outdoor tasks include Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT), Individual Obstacles (IO - 9 physical obstacles to clear in 2 minutes), Command Task (where you act as commander of your group), and the Final Group Task (FGT).

The four essential GTO rules are: 1. Rule of Color (White = candidate & bridging material can touch; Blue/Yellow = only candidate can touch; Red = out of bounds for both). 2. Rule of Out of Bounds (Ground surface cannot be stepped on). 3. Rule of Rigidity/Tying (Planks and ropes can be tied or wedged according to rules). 4. Rule of Group (Entire group along with all load must cross together safely).

The interview assesses your general knowledge, current national and international defense affairs, academic background, family life, hobbies, self-awareness (strengths and weaknesses), motivation for joining the armed forces, and composure under rapid questioning.

Standard physical benchmarks include: 1.6 km (1 mile) run in 7 minutes, 15–20 push-ups in 2 minutes, 15–20 sit-ups in 2 minutes, 3–5 chin-ups/pull-ups, and a 7x7 foot ditch jump. Candidates must also meet visual acuity and BMI standards during medical boards.
