GTO Outdoor Obstacles & Bridging Guide: The 4 Golden Rules of PGT, HGT & Command Tasks
A tactical blueprint for solving Progressive Group Tasks, cantilevers, fulcrums, and leading Command Tasks with poise.
Author: Tactical Preparation Unit (Outdoor Dynamics Instructor) Standard Reference Guide
Key Tactical Takeaways:
- The 4 fundamental physical rules of GTO tasks.
- How to construct reliable cantilever and fulcrum bridge supports.
- How to lead as a commander without bossing subordinates around.
### The Role of the Group Testing Officer (GTO)
The GTO does not judge candidates in isolation; he observes your real-time behavior in a social setting. In outdoor tasks (PGT, HGT, Command Task, FGT), the objective is to transport your entire group along with a heavy load (e.g. ammo box, drum) across a designated series of obstacles using provided equipment (wooden planks, bamboos, and ropes).

### The 4 Fundamental GTO Rules
1. **Rule of Color:**
- **White Structure:** Can be touched by both candidates and bridging materials (planks/ropes).
- **Blue / Yellow Structure:** Can be touched by candidates only; bridging material CANNOT touch blue/yellow surfaces.
- **Red Structure:** Strictly out of bounds for both candidates and equipment.
2. **Rule of Out of Bounds:**
- The earth or ground between starting line and finishing line is out of bounds. Stepping on the ground results in an immediate foul, requiring stepping back.
3. **Rule of Rigidity & Tying:**
- Planks and ropes cannot be tied to each other to make one long rigid structure unless a fixed support is used. No two loose structures can be tied end-to-end without a grounded anchor.
4. **Rule of Group:**
- The task is not finished until all group members AND all assigned equipment/loads are safely across the finish line.

### Core Engineering Principles Used in GTO Tasks
- **The First-Class Lever (Fulcrum Principle):** Placing a plank across an intermediate support with weight applied at the rear end to cantilever the front end forward.
- **The Counterweight System:** Utilizing the body weight of 2-3 group members to hold the anchor side of a plank firm while a scout crosses to the next secure foothold.
- **Rope Extension / Lashings:** Using square or clove hitches to secure a plank temporarily to a vertical upright to prevent sliding.
